California Maternity, Family, and Brand Photographer — San Anselmo — Marin County
Back at one of my favorite spots on the Marin County coast for this lifestyle maternity session. It’s certainly easier to see the difference between posed and lifestyle photography when there are kids involved. However, I think it’s entirely possible to achieve a lifestyle (or relaxed and authentic) feel for maternity sessions too. It’s a request I get all the time.
Lifestyle is not the same as documentary style. At a lifestyle maternity session, I still give prompts. I will position you in the places with ideal, flattering light, but once you’re in there a lot of it happens naturally. That’s the beauty of lifestyle photography. I believe the simple things you do naturally- smiling at your partner, laughing together, walking hand in hand- are flattering and photo worthy. Much more so than being perfectly posed in unnatural positions.

More than any other session, I get a lot of questions about maternity photo sessions. One common one is about when to book the session. I recommend scheduling your maternity session for 34-35 weeks pregnant. It’s not at all an exact science. Please consider booking your session two or more months in advance.
Another common question is about what to wear during a maternity session. Style is entirely up to you. I do recommend wearing something that is form fitting in at least one area of the belly. Tunic style tops and dresses that are loose fitting both above and below the belly tend to not photograph well. Whether you go casual with jeans and a top or choose a maternity dress, you’ll be happiest in something that feels comfortable and is true to your regular style.
